Tips for Budding Flower Harvesters
Judy Colbert
1. Call before you visit to make sure there are blooms to pick and to determine the hours of operation. If you're particular about the type of flowers you want, ask if they're available.
2. As Noel Coward said, "Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun." It is not a good idea for flower-pickers to pick in midday, for the blossoms will wilt, almost before you get home. Early morning or early evening are best for pickers and flowers.
3. Take a bucket and shears. Some places will provide the cutters and a plastic bag with water, but your own bucket or pail is better.
4. Pick flowers that are in the bud stage. They'll last longer than flowers that are in full bloom.
